I have used Firefox since it came out...no problems, I love it. I can't stand IE, but I never had to worry about it. UNTIL NOW. My son downloaded a program he shouldnt have and my system suffered. I have cleaned it, run anti-everything I can (virus scan, adaware, spybot, system mechanic), nothing dangerous is found anymore. Now though, when online I cant keep Internet Explorer from popping up every 10 seconds it seems with some web page trying to sell me something (no specific page, just ads). Is there anything else I can run or a way within XP to shut IE down? Firewall says it is on, anti virus is on...what else can I do?

Seems you've got a Hijacker on your computer...best way of removing it is hijackthis...
http://download.hijackthis.eu/hijackthis...
After scanning save a txt file to my document then copy and paste the scan results into the box on this site and it will tell you what to remove...(whats safe and whats bad)
http://www.hijackthis.de/
Then after removing the entry(s) reboot your computer....
Make sure to disable system restore before doing this or it will come back on the next bootup. Once removed then you can reinable system restore and make a new restore point.
What else can I do about IE?windows 98 internet explorerActually, what does the trick most of the time is Disabling System Restore...this is where most of the "Bad Guys" store themselves. So the next time you reboot it's put right back on the computer!!! Report It
sounds like you stil have some type of spyware in your computer. try restarting your system in safe mode, and then run all the programs that you have for removing stuff like this, spybot, anti-virus, etc.
Try running Comodo BOClean.

IE is not the problem. Your Windows is still infected despite your attempts at "cleaning" it.
IE cannot be removed as it is an intergral part of Windows.
Is that advertising trying to sell you, one (or more) of these useless rogue software products? If it is one of these, then it is an infection called Smitfraud that is causing the your problems. It is scam advertising trying to swindle you. And a link to a free removal tool is down at the bottom.

If so, then you have a Smitfraud infection and a free removal tool called SmitFraudFix with the removal procedure is here:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix...
More infomation and another free removal tool called RogueFix can be found here:

Most "All-Purpose" malware apps such as AVG, Norton, Spybot etc unfortunatly can not remove or even detect this vile pest called Smitfraud.
Good luck.
